Statewide initiatives (SWIs), or statewide coalitions, are concerted efforts by institutions of higher education, community organizations, and government officials in a state to change aspects of the campus and community environment that contribute to high-risk alcohol use. Long-lasting environmental change is accomplished by creating and mobilizing campus and community coalitions to local action and collaborating at the state level to advance policy and environmental change.
SWIs foster collaboration among multiple individuals and organizations, which may bring more attention to the prevention efforts on the state level. Through an SWI, college administrators, state officials, community coalitions to reduce underage drinking, and other professional or trade associations (e.g., for chiefs of police or the hospitality industry) can collaborate to influence long-lasting environmental and public policy changes more effectively. This approach is especially effective in limiting alcohol availability; increasing enforcement of local, state, and federal laws; and restricting alcohol marketing and promotion.
This Webinar will also highlight lessons learned and best practices from successful SWIs.
